The total population of Nuwara Eliya district is 790,735 (2019) with the estimated population for 2019 is being 770,044. The urban sector of Nuwara Eliya district comprises of Nuwara Eliya Municipal Council, Hatton-Dikoya Urban Council and Thalawakele-Lindula Urban Council. Nuwara Eliya Muncipal Council as well as Thalawakele-Lindula Urban Council situated in Nuwara Eliya divisional secretary’s division. Hatton-Dikoya Urban Council is in Ambagamuwa divisional secretary’s division. The population of urban area is 48,615 and it is 6.1 percent of the total population. The population of estate area in Nuwara Eliya district is 437,076 and it is more than half of the district population (53.6 percent)
Nuwara Eliya district has a land area of 1,706 square kilometers (sq.km). It has a population density of 412 persons per sq.km.. The population density of the urban area is 2,316 persons per sq.km.
There are 13 MOH areas. The highest population is reported from Ambagamuwa MOH area and it is 91,015. The population of Walapane MOH area is 47,978 and is the MOH division with the lowest population. 44 primary health.
